Wall Drug

As many of you know, Wall Drug is legendary for all of the signs that they have along the roads promoting all of the crazy things that you can get there. We started to try to take a picture of all of the signs along the road, but that actually proved to be difficult and a bit tiring. So, I'll include a photo of one of the first signs we saw -- a classic promoting their signature "Free Ice Water."

I think Wall Drug was everything we hoped it would be. A block-long cheesy tourist attraction offering every type of souvenir that a road-weary traveler would want.

One of the reasons Sandy wanted to stop at Wall Drug was to fulfill her father's dream of getting one of their famous pecan rolls. As the story goes, Sandy's dad and grandpa were driving across the country in the 1950's, and after 500 miles of Wall Drug signs promoting pecan rolls, they stopped to get one. When they arrived, they were all gone! In 1976, when the next generation of the Greenwald family took a road trip, Sandy's dad wanted to try again to get a pecan roll. While they had them at that time, they did not meet expectations. Thus, when Sandy arrived in 2008, she wanted to make a 3rd attempt by the Greenwald family to acquire a tasty Wall Drug pecan roll. Arriving at 8:30pm meant that the quest was precarious -- they may be all out for the day. When we approached the counter and asked for a pecan roll, the guy looked at us with a big smile and said, unbelievably, "We have one left!" He qualifed that by saying it had been there all day, so he actually gave it to us for free. According to Sandy, it was delicious (at least in the inside, past the crusty surface), and tasted especially good with the Free Ice Water.

I'm afraid of any baked goods that require what appears to be a steak knife. ;)
