"We're going into a valley, I might lose you... Mom, are you there?"
Or, they will try to call us, and will get voicemail.
"Sorry I missed your call Mom and Dad, we were along the coast/in the Badlands/in Yellowstone and couldn't get a signal."
Finally at one point, Sandy's mom said, "You kids are city kids - hurry up and get to the city!"
We ended up eating dinner at an Italian restaurant called Tiramisu which is down an alley off of Kearny St. with several other restaurants.

How funny! I happened to stumble upon your blog quite randomly (noticed the Hello San Francisco as the latest post) only to see an almost exact road trip that I just took w/ my girlfriend last month. At least the Portland to San Francisco part (we're native San Franciscans).
This included the Heathman Hotel (ate there, didn't stay there), the Tillamook factory, lunch in Yachats (where we stayed, too, there are some great hotels right on the coast there), a shady motel in Crescent City, Mendocino through the curvy roads, down through the Golden Gate bridge.
For a kick you might find our photos from our trip a little familiar.

PS- There are many far better restaurants in SF than the ones in North Beach, I hope you went to more than just that one. I recommend the House of Nanking just a bit further down on Kearny at Jackson. Don't order off the menu, just tell the guy you want to be surprised.
PPS- I hope the rest of your trip to LA is down 101 and not I5. A more scenic trip out of SF is 280 south to 101, then down through San Luis Obisbo and Santa Barbara. Enjoy the rest of your trip.
Actually I stand corrected about your SF restaurant, looks like it was on Belden Place, not North Beach. Those are decent restaurants there, nevermind. :-)
